Course description

Emetophobia or the specific fear of vomiting is a relatively under-researched phenomenon relative to other anxiety disorders (Keyes, et al., 2018). Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy utilizing Exposure and Response Prevention (E/RP) has the most scientific support for reducing symptoms in other anxiety disorders and has some support in reducing the fear of vomiting in both adults and youth (Barlow, et al., 2017). This seminar will review the current literature as it pertains to diagnosis and treatment and guide clinicians to make accurate differential diagnosis using evidence-based assessment tools (Boschen, Veale, Ellison, Redell, et al., 2013). We will present an outline using CBT approaches for treating emetophobia and discuss considerations for tailoring treatment for working with children and teens (Maerton, et al., 2017) , as well as managing secondary restrictive eating (Coglan & Otasawie, 2019). Finally, we will discuss what exposure and response prevention looks like and present a case example. Participants will leave with a better understanding for assessing and diagnosing emetophobia as well as be able to discuss treatment elements for working with youth and adults presenting with specific fears of vomiting.
