Course description

In light of the disparity between the demographic makeup of the clinical workforce and those seeking care, it is important that all therapists, particularly non-Black therapists, understand the connection between collective social experiences and the identified needs of their African American clients. Therapists' inability to detect the varied ways long stemming trauma may manifest in African American clients can significantly undermine the effectiveness and client experience of therapy. Through this presentation it is believed that learners will gain increased understanding of the underlying causes and drivers for client presentation in therapy, namely those of African American clients.

Learning objectives

1

Identify three (3) effects of racism and prejudice on the health of African Americans

2

Explain the key behavioral patterns of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS), and how PTSS relates to Terror Management Theory

3

Identify at least two (2) ways colorism affects employment, social outcomes, legal outcome, and self-esteem of African Americans.
